the lake breathes where it will · the ice closes what you open
a tale of the Long Night · tnaapp
HOW TO PLAY
Touch and hold (or arrows / WASD) — the keeper skates toward your hand; release and the ice carries you. Pale bubbles gather where a breath will rise; the fading arc is its time. Stand still there and the spud opens the ice. A breath that finds an open hole is +1. The ice slowly closes what you open — and when the air pales from one side, a squall is coming to carry you. A breath that meets solid ice is lost. Lose three and the night ends. M mutes.
THE STORY
The lake took the whole of summer when the Long Night came, and sealed it under a yard of black ice. But summer is a living thing, and living things breathe. You are the keeper of the breathing-holes, skating the dark with an iron spud, opening the lake’s skin wherever a breath rises — because the ice closes every kindness behind you, and whatever waits for morning down there must last the night.
