The river did not die when the Long Night came. It went under, and it still needs to breathe — so two keepers carry the long saw out onto the dark ice and open the breathing holes, one kneeling at each handle. The saw is older than both of them and keeps the only law it has ever kept: it cuts for the hand that pulls while the other lets go. Forced from both ends it bows — and a bowed blade remembers.
