The road through the white field was old before the Night came — it remembers carts, and hooves, and somebody singing on the way home. Now only you walk it, up and down behind a blade of black birchwood, turning the snow out of the ruts. The field is patient. It has nowhere else to be, and it wants the road back; you are all that is still deciding otherwise, one pass at a time.
